Pyrenees - Béarn - Farm for sale

Just 25 kilometres south of Pau, past the Jurançon vineyards, the land begins to rise dramatically as one approaches the high mountains and the famous Tour de France passes - Marie-Blanque - Col d'Aubisque - Soulor - and the ski resort of Gourette.

At about 650m altitude this farm sits perched on the top of a hill, just before the real mountains begin. Traditionally these farms - on the line between foothill pasture and high mountain alpine pasture - raised the sheep used to produce the famous local ewes' milk cheese. The current owners have been raising cows and calves for beef on the farm for the past few years.

There are three main building on the estate:

- a traditional Béarn farmhouse, now used as a 6-bedroomed upmarket gite (pictured below)

- a three-bedroomed cottage - where the current owners live

- a long two-storey barn and cow-shed with 480m² floorspace.

The 6 bedroom gite for sale

The farmhouse dates back to the 18th century and has been extensively modernised and refurbished as a comfortable holiday home for up to 15 guests. There are 6 double bedrooms, 4 bathrooms , large kitchen and lounge areas, wood-burning stoves .... and gas-fired central heating.

The owner's cottage is a fairly big stone-built building, lovingly restored and transformed into a cosy home. The ground floor is open plan with kitchen, dining and lounge area with open fire, a mezzanine as office/bedroom/library, and a lower floor with two bedrooms and a bathroom. There's another big room downstairs currently used as a playroom/ping-pong etc.

The barn is a classic Béarn edifice from the early 18th century: solid, vast and .... teeming with potential. If you like farming then it's got everything you need to house a hundred brébis ... and if you want to expand the gite business then the challenge is there. There is room for at least two 3-bedroomed gites.

The land surrounds the main buildings and falls away in every direction. There are 16 or so hectares of pasture for calves, ewes or horses which can be exploited as such or let to neighbours. There is woodland which provides all the firewood one needs. Paths and tracks lead off towards the mountains and are accessible to hikers and mountain bikers. Road cyclists will enjoy testing themselves against the TdF climbs in the vicinity. There are a number of springs on the state, one of which supplies all the farm's needs. The water - which is bottled further down the valley under the St Ogeu label - is as pure as you will find in Europe ... and is tested quarterly by the local authorities.

The estate is in the Parc National des Pyrénées and boasts an extraordinary number of wild-flowers, butterflies and birds.

Our opinion:

This property is currently exploited as a working farm with lots of animals and owners recognized officially as 'farmers'. However, it does not have to be exploited as such: it is more of a lifestyle property with possibilities of creating an equestrian centre or just a get-away-from-it-all retreat. It ticks all the boxes for those looking for an estate with no near neighbours, plenty of land, healthy environment, a working gite .... and plenty of scope for development. The gite lets for over €2k per week. Although secluded, the farm is only ten minutes from the nearest town (Arudy) with its supermarkets, cafés, restaurants and medical services. A rare and unusual property which is worth viewing.

Central Pyrenees

South of Gascony, the area covered by the central Pyrenees is more or less the départements of Ariège, Haute Garonne and Hautes Pyrénées. This is where the Pyrenean range rises straight up like a wall with very little piedmont of foothill area, to a uniform height of over 3000 metres.

Seen from the plains below words like majestic and stunning are too feeble. The Pyrenees are everything one expects from a mountain range: impressive, high, easily accessible and covered in snow. Unlike the Alps they are home to a carpet of deciduous forest - beech, larch, elder - which make for real seasons as springtime green turns rich and dark in summer before fusing into reds and flame yellows in autumn.

The main cities in the region are Foix, Tarbes and Pau - all associated with ruling kings and dukes who protected their citizens from invaders and terrors both real and imaginary. Lourdes, the other big town of the region, is actually in the mountains, surrounded by towering peaks and steep valleys.

Obviously winter sports play a major role in local tourism with a number of resorts serving urbanites from Toulouse and Bordeaux as well as a smattering of foreigners. The other big attraction is spas, of which the region has many. Although some of these are 'medicalisé' (you need a prescription to take the waters), the trend is towards a more open approach with each spa town vying to provide well-being water products for the tourist.

Finally, we can't speak of the Pyrenees without mentioning cycling. The moment of truth in any Tour de France is when the riders attack mythical passes such as the Tourmalet, the Aubisque or the Port de Balès.
